The objective.
New World Newtown is one of the original supermarkets in this Wellington suburb. Previous strengthening to the building was completed in the 1980s, but with new building codes introduced it was deemed below standard, required seismic strengthening work to bring it up to an acceptable level.
Our involvement.
Petone Engineering was contracted to carry out the seismic strengthening of the upper level car park and strengthening work on the supermarket itself downstairs at the Newtown Mall.
While the supermarket is at ground level, the carpark is on Level 1. Both the carpark roof and deck required strengthening, as well as the concrete ceiling panels on the ground floor.
An added complexity to this project was the requirement for both the supermarket and carpark to remain open during the seismic strengthening work. We achieved this requirement through a lot of careful planning and work closely with the public to ensure public safety and minimal disruption to the business.
The outcome.
We delivered this project successfully and to the anticipated NBS rating, along with minimal disruption to the supermarket business.
