Project Facts

  • Steel weight: 122 tonnes

  • Estimated hours: 14,600

  • Client: Catalyst Consulting

  • Location: 22 The Terrace, Central Wellington

  • Consultant: Beca

  • 22 The Terrace is a ten story building constructed in the late 80’s.

The project involves the seismic retrofit of the building to 100% NBS.

We were contacted by Catalyst early in the project to comment and consult on the design.

  • We offered some design modifications and alternative options at a round table meeting with Catalyst and Beca.

After completing a cost and feasibility assessment it was decided some of the options we presented added substantial value in terms of reduced costs and quicker installation, and were adopted into a new design for the building.

This project shows the benefits of early sub-contractor involvement in the design phase of a project.

The building itself consists of a basement, 10 floors and a roof services facility. It is surrounded by adjacent office blocks on 3 sides.

The strengthening is on every floor and mostly internal with a small amount of exterior work on the eastern wall. Positioning the steel components on the required floors was a challenge, and the steel was designed to accommodate the tight access.
