Newtown New World

Project Facts

  • Steel weight: 50 tonnes

  • Estimated hours: 4,500

  • Client: Armstrong Downes Commercial

  • Location: Newtown Mall, Newtown, Wellington

  • Consultant: EQSTRUC Structural Engineers

  • New World Newtown Supermarket and Mall is one of the original supermarkets in the area. It had previously had some strengthening completed in the 80’s but with the new codes it was deemed below standard and required work to bring it up to an acceptable level.

  • Petone Engineering was contracted to carry out the seismic strengthening of the upper level car park and New World supermarket itself downstairs at the Newtown Mall.

The Supermarket is at ground level with a covered carpark on level 1. The carpark roof and deck both required strengthening along with the concrete ceiling panels on the ground floor.

With both the car park and the supermarket needing to stay open during this seismic upgrade, we needed to do a lot of careful planning and work closely with the public to ensure public safety and minimal disruption to the business.
