SCNZ Awards: Celebrating Excellence in Structured Steel

The SCNZ Awards, an esteemed recognition in the steel construction industry, recently concluded their Excellence in Steel Awards for the year 2022. Among the notable winners was the category of Earthquake Strengthening, introduced for the first time by SCNZ. The recipient of this groundbreaking award was Petone Engineering, the esteemed steel constructor, involved in the seismic strengthening project at 30 Waring Taylor.

The project at 30 Waring Taylor aimed to enhance the building's structural integrity and resilience to earthquakes, a crucial consideration in earthquake-prone regions. Petone Engineering's expertise and innovative approach made them the worthy recipient of the inaugural Earthquake Strengthening award. Our diligent work not only reinforced the building but also seamlessly integrated the main structure into its architectural design.

The seismic strengthening project at 30 Waring Taylor utilized a total steel tonnage of 80 tonnes. It involved nearly 10,000 man-hours to complete, showcasing the magnitude of effort invested in ensuring the building's safety. The approximate value of the structural steelwork amounted to $1,550,000, reflecting the significance of the project.

One of the notable aspects of the project was the retention of the building's facade, which dates back to 1920 and holds historical significance. Petone Engineering's design incorporated various character features, such as exposed structural steel, timber, and brickwork, preserving the building's heritage while enhancing its resilience.

The judges' comment on the project highlighted its innovative nature and the remarkable solution it provided for seismic strengthening of a significant medium-rise building. They praised the new skeleton, which not only preserved the original 1920s steelwork but also added substantial strength and stiffness to the structure. Furthermore, the visually appealing integration of the reinforced elements seamlessly merged with the architectural aesthetics of the building.

The SCNZ Awards serve as a testament to the outstanding achievements and contributions of professionals in the steel construction industry. By recognizing excellence, innovation, and dedication, these awards inspire further advancements and breakthroughs in the field. The seismic strengthening project at 30 Waring Taylor, where Petone Engineering was the Structural Steel Contractor and Nominator, stands as a remarkable example of how steel construction can be leveraged to ensure both safety and aesthetic appeal in architectural endeavors.
