Petone Engineering was involved in the first stage of the strengthening work on this building, which is made up of brick, concrete, timber and steel, and is now working on the main seismic upgrade project.
- Steel weight – 158 tonnes
- Heritage Building over 100 years old
- Working around occupied apartments
- Awkward access and space constraints, with out-of-square existing structures
The steelwork needed to fit in with both the original construction of the building and more recently seismic upgrade attempts.
Petone Engineering performed an initial strengthening of the apartments to secure the building until the full upgrade could be performed.
This is now the final upgrade and contains some brackets that weigh more than 1000kg. This is a challenge as there is no crane or Hiab options available, and the steel will have to be positioned and lifted manually using dollies and chain hoists.
