Engineering Transmission Gully with CPB HEB Joint Venture

CPB Contractors and HEB Construction make up the joint venture, contracted to design and build Wellington’s new Transmission Gully. This much-anticipated road will be a 27km, four lane motorway linking MacKays Crossing to Linden. It is scheduled to open in 2020.

Behind the Scenes

Chris and the team enjoy working on Transmission Gully. Chris says, “It’s great to be part of such as important project. The scale and complexity of the work is always challenging, interesting and we need to be available at short notice. It is often a case of, “Mate we need this done, so get someone down here.” We’ve done many different jobs from pile work, on site welding, roading barriers, and developing new plates for drilling rigs and excavator buckets. Things are always moving quickly, their needs are urgent and the work is often out of the ordinary.

Precision Engineering for Building Bridges

Transmission Gully includes 20+ bridges and the piling stage of each bridge’s construction requires onsite welding and cutting works. Each pile requires an external sleeve to be installed using specially designed metal guide gates. These gates guide the casing onto the sleeve. The work is very skilled and requires total precision and accuracy. The sleeves are 3m in diameter and must be cut within a tolerance of +/-1%. This whole process requires both preparatory work in the workshop as well as onsite installation and operation. Also, to be allowed onsite, any supplier needs to meet very strict onsite clearances, permissions and undergo extensive induction processes.

Dean Bennett, Project Engineer for CPB says, “When we called Petone Engineering we had an initial idea of what we were looking for but needed to nut out the methodology. We spoke with Chris on the Friday to get his advice on how to approach the job and to get started.

By the Monday Chris had the necessary equipment installed in the workshop and we were underway. When Aidan came on site, his precision and skill was simply impressive. We knew this type of work was a perfect fit with Petone Engineering and we were right. They are very good at dealing with things a little unusual and specialised. They are always good to deal with”.
